“Art washed away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” – Pablo Picasso.
At the beginning of 2023, the D.F. Malherbe Art Club was sketched into being. Like-minded and talented individuals came in droves to sign up to join the quest for artistic fulfilment. On that day, we realised that the Art Club would not just be a way to pass the time, but about was building a kaleidoscopic community of creative personalities.
Learners get together biweekly to try their hand at new techniques while adding onto their existing talents. From the importance of knowing their tools, paper and mediums, to learning how to mix their own paint – no learner is left behind as we travel toward worlds within our own imagination and beyond. While the learners sharpen their pencils, they sharpen their understanding of D.F. Malherbe High School’s values. Everyone’s art is up for critique but not without a brush stroke of empathy, a shading of respect, a fine line of integrity, and a ruler of responsibility – all dipped in a palette of excellence, of course.
Like bursting tubes of paint, our learners cannot contain their excitement for the D.F. Malherbe High School’s annual Arts Festival. They have a chance to display their creations confidently and leave their audience speechless and transfixed. As the guides of this flourishing group, we hope to expose our learners to such opportunities of empowerment more frequently in the years to come. In the words and spirit of D.F. Art Club, ‘Happy Sketching!’
